Tucked down a side street, off the main drag, is a funky little café called Bom Gosto. It is safe to say the coffee scene has exploded in Lilydale and this is one of many destinations to choose from when foraging for a coffee stop or lunch. It has fast become a local favourite for its Toby Estate coffee and tasty pittas. This little addition prides itself on using free range eggs and fresh produce grown locally – from their own farm in Yarra Glen.
Finding Bom Gosto is not too hard if you know where Castella St in Lilydale is. With outdoor seating and clear signage you will be greeted by the beloved ‘Choppa-dog’ in no time. Take a seat, peruse the menu and head to the counter to order with the young and funky staff. Deciding on which dish to eat will be the hardest part. Do you take the healthy option: Green breakfast (broccolini, asparagus, zucchini, avocado and poached eggs on multigrain) or the more indulgent option: Bom benny (wood fired pork belly, apple cider hollandaise, almond flakes, char siu sauce and two poached eggs on sourdough)? My advice; take a friend and halve your meals. Sharing is always the best way to experience a meal.
When it comes to the Yarra Valley there is always more to the story than meets the eye. Bom Gosto has proven to be a book with many chapters. Not only does it offer a plethora of options for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but with the addition of a Bom Gosto Farm you can also find plenty of produce and products to purchase in store. Think of it as your very own Bom Gosto Farmers Market. You will find house made relishes, chai and pickles. Farm grown garlic and other goodies are often on offer for purchase, as well as ‘true’ free range eggs. So take your environmentally friendly tote and fill up on locally grown and made produce after you have devoured your meal.
The team at Bom Gosto are taking full advantage of the benefits a wood fire oven brings. You will notice that many items on the menu revolve around this delicious cooking style, resulting in a distinct smoky experience. Honestly, it is the food that will keep you coming back for more. It is tasty, wholesome and full of flavour. There is something on the menu for everyone, from wood fire pizzas to healthy salads. With themed nights the men will also feel catered for with burgers, parmas, pittas and pizza – we all know that the way to a man’s heart is through his stomach!
If it’s a casual but enjoyable outing you are looking for, then this is the place for you. Expect a staff that would be at home in Richmond, a cool and calm atmosphere and to walk out with your taste buds dancing. Get there early, as they get busy at lunch and pick up some house baked treats to take home with you (the muffin and Portuguese tart that we devoured were up there with uber delicious.)
